What is neuropathic pain?
Nerve-related pain may be described as burning, shooting, electric or associated with sensitivity to touch. There are many potential causes and not every burning pain is neuropathic.
Investigations
Assessment focuses on the distribution of symptoms, neurological findings and relevant medical history. Imaging or neurophysiology may be helpful in selected cases.
Individualised management
Options may include medication review, rehabilitation, strategies for improving function and targeted interventions in suitable cases. Treatment aims should be realistic and agreed together.
This information is general and is not a diagnosis. If you have rapidly progressive neurological symptoms or new bladder or bowel problems, seek urgent medical assessment.
